Sandals Negril Review — What We Wish We’d Known Before We Went

What We Wish We’d Known Before We Went

My husband and I saved for years for this trip. When we got married we couldn’t afford Sandals — so for our anniversary we finally went all out. Eight days at Sandals Negril with the Butler Elite suite. This was my first real vacation without a laptop in over six years and we were ready to be completely pampered.

I’m going to be completely honest with you because expectations matter enormously at Sandals. If you go in knowing what to expect your trip will be so much better. If you go in with the fantasy version in your head — like we did — your first day might feel like a disaster.

The Butler Elite Experience — What It Is and What It Isn’t

Let me set the expectations right here because this is where most people get tripped up.

We had visions of our butler meeting us at the airport with a sign. Instead we waited in the lobby for almost 30 minutes before meeting him. Then we sat in our room filling out paperwork for another 30 minutes. We were starving after a 12 hour travel day and were told nothing was open. I ended up carrying my own food back to the room while cleaning staff said “hustle, hustle” as I walked by. I cried. On my 40th birthday trip. Not a great start.

We fired our first butler within an hour and were seriously considering going home.

Here’s what saved our trip: We decided to give it one more night. The next morning two managers and a new butler showed up and promised to make it right. They arranged breakfast on our patio — my husband woke up to omelets and ocean views — and the next seven days were a complete 180.

By the end we had reserved chairs on the beach every morning, restaurant reservations at all the best spots, drinks waiting when we came off the snorkeling trip, flowers on the bed, and two butlers who genuinely cared about making our trip perfect.

The honest truth about Butler Elite in 2026: Butler service is still very much the highlight of Sandals Negril — recent reviews consistently rave about it and it’s clearly improved since our visit. You now get a dedicated phone to reach your butler directly 24 hours a day which is a huge upgrade. The key is communicating exactly what you want from day one. Don’t wait for them to read your mind — tell them. Once we did that everything clicked.

Booking Tips That Will Save You Money

Sandals constantly runs sales so don’t ever pay the full advertised price. The 65% off promotions are real and happen regularly.

Military discount — if anyone in your household has served this is worth calling about. It’s 10% off and adds up significantly on a trip this size. You generally have to call to get this applied rather than booking online.

Call after you get your best online quote. We always got a better price by calling directly. Ask specifically about any additional promotions — we got a free couples massage thrown in by mentioning our anniversary.

Book early. We booked 8 months out and by three months before our trip all the lower tier rooms were completely sold out. If you want a specific room category don’t wait.

Skip booking airfare through Sandals if you can do better elsewhere — you still get the airfare discount credit even if you book flights independently. Or use my favorite cheap flight tool to find the best price!

Getting There — The Airport Experience

You’ll fly into Montego Bay. The Sandals welcome center is easy to find — it’s the biggest storefront in the terminal. From there you’re assigned to a bus to the resort.

Get the Club Mobay pass. We didn’t on the way down and spent almost 2 hours in immigration. The pass ($80 per person both ways or $30 for return only) lets you bypass the line completely. You can also purchase it at the airport if you didn’t book ahead. The lounge has complimentary food and drinks — the lunch spread is genuinely good.

The bus ride to Negril takes 70 minutes on a good day and close to 2 hours in traffic. The driving in Jamaica is an experience — they drive on the left, the roads are narrow, and it moves fast. Not for the faint of heart but perfectly safe.

The Resort — What’s Changed Since Our Visit

The rooms have been updated since our stay and the newer Butler suites now feature SkyPools — private infinity edge pools — rooftop terraces, and premium ocean views. The swim-up suites with direct lagoon pool access are reportedly stunning and are the ones current guests rave about most.

The beach — I want to be upfront about this because it surprised us. The famous 7 mile beach at the resort is narrower than the photos suggest and recent reviewers note it has diminished over the years. It’s still beautiful but go in knowing it’s not as wide as the marketing makes it look.

The pools are excellent — there’s a main pool with swim-up bar, a crystal lagoon pool perfect for floating, and a piano bar pool that has a great social atmosphere.

Room service is included 24 hours a day and the food is genuinely good. Scuba diving is included and you can go twice per day — if you want to get certified you can do it at the resort for around $300 per person.

Places You Absolutely Cannot Miss

Rick’s Cafe — go twice if you can. Once by car and once by boat. It’s one of the coolest bars we’ve ever been to — cliff diving, great drinks, and incredible views. You can rent a 25 foot Chris Craft with a guide for a 2 hour sunset cruise from the resort. That was honestly the best part of our entire trip.

Fireman’s Lobster Pit — when in season this is an absolute must. Located right near the beach security stand by Barefoot, Fireman lets you pick a live lobster from his cage in the sea and grills it fresh in garlic butter for around $20 for a 1-2 pounder. Absolutely incredible. Sometimes he wanders through the resort — if you see him, flag him down.
